¿Qué es el Fondo Solidario de Viajes "Adalys Vázquez"?
El Fondo Solidario de Viajes "Adalys Vázquez" (anteriormente Fondo NOVA Viajes) fue fundado en 2007 como parte del Instituto Conmemorativo A.J. Muste, para apoyar a grupos populares en América Latina, el Caribe y América Indígena con aportes económicos que les permitan viajar a encuentros regionales, con el fin de desarrollar liderazgos de base, y coordinar y fortalecer los movimientos sociales del continente. ¿Quién maneja el Fondo Adalys?
Las solicitudes son revisadas por un comité integrado por activistas latinoamericanas, representantes de cada una de las siguientes regiones: México, América Central, Caribe, Andes, Cono Sur y Brasil. Este comité evalúa las solicitudes y recomienda aportes, los cuales son ratificados por la junta directiva del Instituto Conmemorativo A.J. Muste, también integrada por activistas.
¿Quién fue Adalys Vázquez?
Adalys Vázquez Ramírez fue una activista cubana e integrante fundadora del comité del Fondo de Viajes, comprometida siempre con la lucha social. El 16 de marzo de 2009 Adalys perdió su batalla contra el cáncer, a los 45 años. Desde 1992 había trabajado en el Centro Memorial Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. en La Habana, fomentando la participación en campañas y redes contra el libre comercio, la deuda, la militarización y la guerra. Además era líder laica y educadora popular en la iglesia Bautista.
Nombramos el Fondo de Viajes por Adalys como homenaje a nuestra compañera y a toda las personas de base, en especial las mujeres, que se dedican a la justica social pero sus aportes a menudo no son reconocidos. Con este fondo rechazamos su invisibilidad, y agradecemos profundamente su labor y sus sacrificios.
¿Por qué apoyar al Fondo Adalys?
El Instituto Muste fue fundado por activistas, no por donantes; dependemos de la solidaridad de todas y todos ustedes para llevar a cabo nuestros programas de apoyo a la acción no-violenta por la justicia social. Sin su apoyo el Fondo Adalys no podrá continuar sus aportes en el 2011.
Inspirados por el principio de la reciprocidad indígena, a los grupos que se benefician del Fondo Adalys les pedimos que apoyen socializando la información acerca del Fondo, y costeando desde sus propias bases una parte importante de sus gastos de viaje, dejando así más recursos en el Fondo para otros grupos. Así, reconocemos públicamente estos gestos solidarios desde las bases como donaciones al Fondo Adalys, con la esperanza de que inspiren a otra gente a contribuir también al Fondo.

The Adalys Vázquez Solidarity Travel Fund (formerly known as NOVA Travel Fund) was founded in 2007 at the A.J. Muste Memorial Institute to support grassroots groups in Latin America, the Caribbean and indigenous America with grants for travel to regional gatherings, with the goal of building base-level leadership and coordinating and strengthening the continent's social movements. Who manages the Adalys Fund?
Applications are reviewed by a committee made up of Latin American activists representing each of the following regions: Mexico, Central America, Caribbean, Andes, Southern Cone and Brazil. This committee evaluates the applications and recommends grants, which are then ratified by the A.J. Muste Memorial Institute's board of directors, also made up of activists.
Who was Adalys Vázquez?
Adalys Vázquez Ramírez was a Cuban activist and founding member of the Travel Fund committee who committed her life to the struggle for social justice. On March 16, 2009, Adalys lost her battle against cancer at the age of 45. Since 1992 she had worked at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Center in Havana, Cuba, encouraging participation in campaigns and networks against free trade, the debt, militarization and war. She was also a lay leader and popular educator in the Baptist church.
We named the fund for Adalys as an homage to our friend and to all grassroots activists, especially women, who dedicate their lives to social justice yet are rarely recognized for their contributions. With this fund we resist their invisibility, and express our deep gratitude for their labor and their sacrifices.
Why support the Adalys Fund?
The Muste Institute was founded by activists, not donors; we depend on solidarity from all of you to carry out our programs supporting nonviolent action for social justice. Without your support the Adalys Fund will have to stop making grants in 2011.
Inspired by the principles of indigenous reciprocity, we ask the groups that benefit from the Adalys Fund to support us by spreading the word about the Fund, and by raising money from their communities to cover an important part of their trip expenses, leaving more resources available in the Fund to support other groups. We publicly recognize these solidarity gestures from the grassroots as donations to the Adalys Fund, with the hope of inspiring others to step up and donate to the Fund.
